National Trends and Services
The National Trends and Services facet addresses the social inequities that persist in Black communities throughout the United States. The Metro-Manhattan (NY) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, is committed to raising the awareness of economic, health, and social justice issues as well as other barriers that affect the quality of life of African Americans and people of African Ancestry. Our goal is to eliminate disparities in these areas for the betterment of the Harlem Community.
Highlights
Partnership with St. Mary’s Center:
Through partnership with St. Mary’s Center, Harlem, Metro-Manhattan (NY) Links have had meaningful opportunities to connect and share resources with women in Harlem who are living with HIV and AIDS. St. Mary’s Harlem runs an Adult Day Health Care Program that has a women’s support group that meets weekly. Metro-Manhattan (NY) members often join support group meetings and have offered enrichment activities such as yoga, nutrition, budgeting, and esteem building. The intent of the St. Mary’s Adult Day Health Care Program model is to assist individuals with AIDS and HIV live more independently in the community and prolong or eliminate the need for residential health care services.
Public Advocacy:
Metro-Manhattan (NY) Links have been on the front lines of major social justice movements. Metro-Manhattan (NY) Links have participated in advocacy efforts towards women’s rights, economic sustainability, education, civil and voting rights, criminal justice reform, racial justice and healthcare.
Members have worked to raise awareness on 2020 Census compliance in the Harlem community in partnership with the NAACP as well as have organized and participated in voter registration drives before every major election.
